Sequim swimmers splash Kingston

Sequim's wet winter doesn't seem to faze these athletes.

Sequim’s wet winter doesn’t seem to faze these athletes.

The Wolves got five more district meet-qualifying swims and took first place in 10 of 12 events as Sequim splashed Kingston 115-73 on Jan. 14.

Team captain Parker Steichen earned two district qualifiers, in the 100 free (1:01.9, a personal best by four seconds) and the 200 free (2:23.6) events.

Tanner Estep and Douglas Dunbar joined their teammate by earning district qualifiers in the 200 free as Sequim swept the event.

Noe Calderon earned a district-qualifier in the 50 free. His mark of 25.38 is just 1.39 seconds off the state meet standard.

Tommy Moores posted strong swims as well, winning the 200 IM (2:34.2) and 100 butterfly (1:09.8).

Kris Peter-sen, a rookie swimmer, took first place in the 100 backstroke with a 1:14.1 finish.

"We had many great swims today that helped us score the win," Sequim coach Linda Moats said.

Duncan Skinner shed more than 15 seconds off his 500 free time (7:14.9) and is less than 15 seconds from a district-qualifying time. Teammate Triston Cortani posted a 7:11.8 finish in his first time swimming the event.

"(Triston) swam a great time and looked very comfortable doing it but said he didn’t want to do it again any time soon," Moats said.

Sequim swept the diving event, with Ezra Perking in first, Cameron Harrison second and Zach Springer in third.

Lane strategy in a swim meet? Why not?

North Kitsap placed its fastest swimmers in the outer lanes generally used by slower swimmers, possibly helping the Vikings to their 114-70 league win on Jan. 12 in Poulsbo.

"It was a good reminder to the team to swim against the clock and not rely on the competitors in the next lanes to push them to swim their fastest," Moats said. (But) the team did show improvement in many events."

Moores improved by 3.5 seconds in the 200 free and qualified for districts.

Petersen swam a solid time of 2:59.5 in the 200 IM in his first attempt at the event.

Michael Okamoto improved his 100 butterfly time by 10 seconds.

Tanner Estep qualified for districts in the 500 free and Petersen qualified for districts in the 100 back, improving his previous best by more than three seconds.

The Wolves swim at Port Angeles on Jan. 21 and host two teams – Bremerton on Jan. 26 and Olympic on Jan. 28 – to close the regular season.
