The Storm King U16 boys bested teams from Bellingham, Puyallup, Issaquah and Tacoma to win a championship in the U16 Silver Division at the Sounders FC Cup, held in Seattle from July 22-24.
The team includes boys from Sequim, Port Angeles and Forks.
Storm King’s playoff victory on July 23 required a late, come-from-behind goal to tie against a highly-ranked team from Tacoma. Storm King eventually won by way of a penalty kick shootout.
The final on Sunday versus another strong opponent, Whatcom Rangers FC from Bellingham, again required a late goal to tie the score. This sent the second match in a row into penalty kicks. Storm King goalie Navy Thomas-Brenske, who saved two penalty kicks the night previous in making it to the final, once again saved a penalty kick in the final. That was all it took to win the shootout 5-4.
The team has been practicing under the coaching of Peninsula College women’s assistant coach Dana De Vaughn for the past six weeks. She joined the Storm King coaches in leading the team over the weekend.
The next tournament for the Storm King team is at the Dungeness Cup, held in Sequim from Aug. 5-7. See www.dungenesscup.com.
