Sequim’s Thanksgiving Day runners were not too chicken to run these snowy trails.

More than 60 runners and walkers turned out for the first 5K Turkey Trot, a race organizer Kristin Lamoure hopes will be an annual event.

Nate Dressel took the overall title, racing the snow- and ice-laden course in 20 minutes and 11 seconds.

He edged Robert Warnock by five seconds. Alex Barry was third (21:04).

Taking the women’s title was Lisa Preston, who finished in 26 minutes and 36 seconds.

“(Lisa) told me that she lived in Alaska … so she was very familiar with the snow,” Lamoure said. “She has also done an extensive amount of long distance trail running. That training benefited her.”

Rhonda Heckman (27:12) was second and Marianne Madsen (28:18) placed third.

Funds raised and food donated go to local food banks.

Lamoure said she expects to triple the number of runners next year.

“I think it went pretty well, overall,” Lamoure said. “I was so thankful for the amazing showing.

“Most importantly, I think we started a positive new Thanksgiving tradition for our communities and families.

Thanksgiving is a time for sharing, caring, grateful hearts, family and food. Turkey Trots are popular throughout the country, and now I know why.”
