Not a good week to be a prep athlete — unless you were rehabbing an injury and needing some practice.
Snow covered the North Olympic Peninsula last week, postponing dozens of prep basketball games, swim meets, wrestling matches and a league bowling meet across the region.
The Olympic League bowling tourney, originally slated for Jan. 19, was rescheduled to Jan. 23. All five Sequim bowlers qualified for districts. (See www.sequimgazette.com for the story.)
Two basketball games each for Sequim’s boys and girls were postponed;
Sequim’s boys host North Mason tonight (Jan. 25) while the Sequim girls are in Belfair, also taking on North Mason.
Games canceled/postponed:
• Boys basketball vs. North Mason, Jan. 17; vs. Bremerton, Jan. 20
• Girls basketball at North Mason, Jan. 17; at Bremerton, Jan. 20
• Boys swimming/diving vs. Bremerton, Jan. 19
• Wrestling vs. North Kitsap, Jan. 18.
Minus any more rescheduling dates, here’s what is in store for Sequim High School teams in coming weeks.
Sequim’s boys basketball squad (8-2 in Olympic League play, 11-3), now receiving votes in the most recent AP poll (see box), was scheduled to play in Silverdale against Klahowya on Jan. 24 — results of the game were not available at press time. After the North Mason game on Jan. 25, Sequim finishes the regular season with three home dates: North Kitsap on Jan. 27, Kingston on Feb. 3 and Port Angeles on Feb. 7.
The Sequim girls (1-9, 3-11) have the same schedule, only playing home games when the boys are on the road and vice versa. The one exception is the Feb. 7 showdown with Port Angeles, when both Sequim varsity squads play at home.
Sequim’s boys swimming and diving teams (0-4) take on Kingston on Jan. 26, then look to make a splash at the Olympic League meet, set for Jan. 31. Several athletes already have qualified for the West Central District meet, slated for Feb. 9 at Hazen High School in Renton.
Depending on results from the league tourney, Sequim’s bowlers compete at the West Central District tourney in Tacoma on Jan. 28.
Sequim’s wrestling squad (0-4) is at Port Townsend on Jan. 25, hosts Olympic on Jan. 26 and hosts North Kitsap on Jan. 31 to round out the regular season. The postseason begins Feb. 4 with the Olympic League subdistrict tournament in Port Angeles, with top wrestlers advancing to the subregional tourney Feb. 11 in Silverdale.
Sequim’s five bowlers qualified for the district tourney in Tacoma after the Olympic League tournament on Jan. 23. Mikayla Ahlin bowled a three-game series of 368, followed by Megan McAndie (343), Danyelle Wilson (338), Kelsey VanDyken (332) and Christin Egert (311).
