Anglers talk sonar
The next Puget Sound Anglers-North Olympic Peninsula Chapter meeting features Steve Chamberlin, vice president of the Fidalgo/San Juan Islands PSA chapter.
The meeting is at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim.
He will speak on “Improving Your Angling Skills by Taking Full Advantage of Your Sonar.” Chamberlin is a retired U.S. Navy Chief sonarman and has 27 years as a sonar professional.

Peninsula pair take rowing title
Elise Beuke of Sequim and Aubree Officer of Port Angeles combined to take top honors in the Women’s Under 18 JV Double division at the 2014 B.C. Championships/Challenge West rowing competition at Elk Lake near Victoria, B.C., on July 13.
After posting the top qualifying time, Beuke and Officer rowed to a 7:49.6 finish, 17 seconds ahead of Aubrye Tsai and Sarah Perry of Thunderbird Row-ing Club (Richmond, B.C.).
Officer already had earned gold at the event, earning a title in the Women’s Under 18 JV Single division a day earlier.
In the Men’s Under 16 Single, Gabe Wegener of Port Angeles finished third in his heat.
Backpacking expert speaks in Port Angeles
At 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 21, award-winning guidebook author Craig Romano visits the Port Angeles Library to talk about backpacking in Washington.
Drawing from his book “Backpacking Washington (Mountaineers Books),” Romano spotlights destinations for weekend or weeklong adventures, from the Olympic coast to the canyons of the Blue Mountains. The talk is free and open to all ages.
Copies of Romano’s books, along with many other backpacking and hiking guides, are available for checkout at the library, 2210 S. Peabody St. Romano also will have books available for purchase after the event.

Softball squad wins at state senior tourney
The Crocs, a Sequim Senior Baseball team, battled their way to a gold medal in the 60s division at the Washington State Senior Games in Shelton last weekend.

Balla sinks first ace
Allen Balla of Sequim sank his first hole-in-one on July 9 at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course.
Balla use a 7-iron to drive the 140-yard hole No. 7.
