Rain outs end Wilder’s season early

Wilder Baseball, a select squad of top prep baseball players from across the North Olympic Peninsula, saw its 2015 season end with the rain.

Wilder concluded its summer by waiting out the rain at the fourth annual GSL Clackamas Community College/Clark College Invitational in Vancouver and Battle Ground in late July, the Peninsula Daily News reports.

Wilder played two games at the tournament, finishing with a 1-1 record. Its final game was a 5-4 win over the Federal Way Warriors on Friday.

Wilder finishes the season with a 20-11-1 overall record. The summer included a third-place finish at the Senior Babe Ruth state tournament.

The team included Sequim-area players Dusty Bates, James Grubb, Evan Hurn, Ian Quast and Tanner Rhodefer.

Barry is boys’ track MVP …

Alex Barry is MVP once again — this time, for track and field.

The recently graduated Sequim High sports star recently was selected as the All-Peninsula Boys Track and Field MVP by area coaches and the Peninsula Daily News sports staff for the second straight year.

Barry won the class 2A state title in the javelin and, despite an ankle injury, helped run a key leg of the state 2A championship-winning 4×400 relay in May. He also placed ninth in the triple jump.

Joining Barry on the All-Peninsula were fellow Wolves Miguel Moroles (senior; sprints, relays), Oscar Herrera (junior; hurdles, relays), Josh Cibene (senior; pole vault) and Jackson Oliver (junior; jumps).

… and Shreffler is girls’ track MVP

Sequim High track standout Waverly Shreffler recently was selected as the All-Peninsula Girls Track and Field MVP by the area’s coaches and the Peninsula Daily News sports staff.

In her first year running the 800-meter run, Shreffler — a junior — placed fourth at the Class 2A state championships. She also helped the Wolves’ 4×400-meter relay place fifth and the 4×200 relay qualify for state.

Other Wolves named to the All-Peninsula Girls Track and Field include senior Heidi Vereide (jumps/relays), junior Mattie Clark (hurdles) and sophomore Mercedes Woods (sprints/relays).
