Local v-ball teams volley for titles
Winning and runner-up teams were crowned at the Jimmy and Sooke Crabfest 6-on-6 Volleyball Tournament in Port Angeles on Oct. 10.
Eight teams with players from Sequim, Port Angeles, Joyce, Port Townsend and Neah Bay played between six and eight games each. After four rounds of pool play, four of the top teams were put in the "gold" bracket with the other four in the "silver" bracket.
Gold division winners are the Crab Trap team with players from Sequim and Port Angeles, including Erik and Michelle Palenik, Alec Schmidt, Christine Halberg, Sheri Camarena and Sean Oden.
Runner-up in the gold division was the Happy Crabs team of Merle Lamgborgh, Shane Harvey, Mary Stensgard, Ashley Green and Dan Swanson.
Silver division winner was the Volleyball Junkies, a Neah Bay team of Jackie and Jeremiah Johnson, Lisa and Lora Halttunea, and Cornest Grimes.
Second in the silver division was a team with players Alex Baker, Cassandra Noel, Rick Hartley, and Nora and Laura Williams.
Volleyball league begins this month
Registration is under way for the 2009-2010 Peninsula Volleyball League.
The coed league offers play on Sunday nights at the Peninsula College gymnasium (1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles) for players with intermediate to advanced volleyball skills.
The registration fee of $200 per team is due by Nov. 1. Forms are available at the Peninsula College athletics Web site (pc.ctc.edu/life/athletics/default.aspx).
Players wishing to join teams are welcome to attend open gym nights, from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 18 and Oct. 25. League play starts Nov. 1 and runs through February.

Athletes to collect items for food bank
On Saturday, Oct. 17, members of the Sequim High School fall sports teams are joining forces to collect food for the Sequim Food Bank.
Players and parent volunteers are scheduled to be at the Sequim Safeway, 680 W. Washington St., from noon-
6 p.m., asking shoppers to donate food, personal hygiene, baby or household items.
Financial donations are also accepted.
All donations go to the
Sequim Food Bank.
The goal, say event organizers, is to collect 25 carts in six hours.

Paddlers to meet in Port Angeles
The Olympic Peninsula Paddlers are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Vern Burton Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles
Four groups are set to give reports and show slides of recent kayaking trips to the Broken Group islands on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Self-defense classes set for November
The Sequim-based Bodystrong TaeKwon-Do, 244 W. Washington St., offers a series of self-defense classes on four Mondays in November, with each class from 6-7 p.m.
Brandon Stoppani, head instructor for Bodystrong TaeKwon-do and a black belt 5th dan in taekwon-do, leads the class. He has 30 years of self-defense experience.
Class topics include: Nov. 2, release from grabs; Nov. 9, revised release from grabs and basic offensive techniques; Nov. 16, basic offensive techniques; and Nov. 23, revise offensive techniques and combining defensive and offensive techniques.

Horse clinic set
for November
The Jefferson County 4-H Horse Project hosts a clinic with Dr. Richard Vetter, a veterinary equine dentist, on Nov. 7-8 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port Townsend.
Vetter is scheduled to exam and treat horses. He has been trained in advanced equine dental care and is tested and accredited by the International Association of Dentistry.

Coed volleyball
league set for fall
The city of Port Angeles’ Parks and Recreation Department hosts an adult coed volleyball league beginning Oct. 19.
Team registration packets are available at the city parks and recreation office, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Games are at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles. Minimum age is high school age if not involved in a fall, winter or spring prep sport.
Players who would like to find a team on which to play may have their names placed on a "free agent" list by calling the recreation office at 417-4550 and leaving their name, address and phone number.
