Roller derby squad takes on Brawlers

The Port Scandalous Roller Derby, a women’s flat-track roller derby team from the Olympic Peninsula, hosts an intrasquad match between the Red Devil Darlins and the Black Betty Brawlers in the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Olympic Skate Center, 707 S. Chase St., Port Angeles.

Doors open at 5 p.m.

Tickets are $7 at Salon 13, 521 S. Sequim Ave. in Sequim or online at www.brownpapertickets.com, or $10 at the door.

The team will collect canned food for local food banks at the event.

Kayaking classes set

Dungeness Kayaking offers classes for all levels.

“Kayaking Safety & Rescue” runs 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Feb. 12 and Feb. 26. Cost is $25 per person.

“Introduction to Sea Kayaking” is March 12, 26; April 9, 23; May 26 and June 4. A drysuit or wetsuit is required. Cost is $50 per session.

“Introduction to Kayak Camping” is June 18.

“Introduction to Surf” is July 23; Aug. 6, 20; Sept. 1, 15.

Former Pirate named head coach at Whittier College

Former Peninsula College player and assistant coach Shea Harwwell was named head men’s soccer coach at Whittier College, a member of the NCAA Division III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Harwell completed his collegiate playing career helping the Poets to back-to-back SCIAC tournament appearances.

The Gig Harbor native was a defensive standout for the Pirates and stayed to help coach them to a second-place NWAACC finish in 2005. He also served as goalie coach for Port Angeles High School from 2003-2006 while attending Peninsula.

Junior soccer group opens registration

Sequim Junior Soccer’s Spring League registration for recreational soccer is open for U8 thru U15, with divisions for boys and girls. The season runs March 12-May 7.

The junior soccer group is also seeking adults ages 18 and up to referee games.

Tickets available for soccer benefit

Tickets for the Kitsap Pumas versus Peninsula United soccer game in March are available at Brian’s Sporting Goods (542 W. Washington St.) and at the event. The game is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Sequim High School soccer stadium, 601 N. Sequim Ave. Gates open at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for youths younger than 12, $8 for adults and $15 per family.

Proceeds go to Sequim Family Advocates to help construct the Sequim Community Play Fields.
