Barry breaks SMS javelin record
Alex Barry, an eighth-grade student at Sequim Middle School, broke the school’s record in the javelin throw in a league meet against Crescent and Chimacum middle schools on April 27.
Barry threw the javelin 163 feet, topping Kyle Bryant’s 2006 record throw of 157 feet, 3 inches.
Barry has the second-best middle school javelin throw in the nation among 1,778 entries on athletic.net.
Marathon seeks volunteers
Those wishing to participate as volunteers for the 2011 North Olympic Discovery Marathon are encouraged to attend an informational meeting set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Course marshals, registration and finish-line buddy positions still are available. Volunteers receive a T-shirt and the Windermere Volunteer Party tickets.

Softball league opens registration
Sequim Softball League, a coed slowpitch league, has registration open for the 2011 summer season. Teams and players must have applications in by June 4.

Junior soccer club opens camps
The Sequim Junior Soccer Club again is teaming up with UK Elite Soccer to provide players and coaches with fun, educational and cutting-edge development opportunities.
Registration is now up and running for players ages 3-14. All programs include a UK Elite T-shirt and soccer ball.

Port Angeles BMX’s Tuesday series starts
May 10 kicked off the Port Angeles BMX Tuesday Ten series.
The series consists of 15 races; to qualify for their age-group’s overall prize, participants must race at least 10 of those races. Each rider who races on Tuesdays receives a prize.
PABMX offers two free races for new members. There also is a race-10-get-one-free single race coupon available.
Track officials are seeking an announcer; races are traded for volunteer work.

Visit from horse vet is set
The Jefferson County 4-H Horse Program hosts an open clinic with Dr. Richard Vetter of Performance Equine Dentistry from May 14-15 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port Townsend. Vetter will be examining and treating horses. Appointments are booked on a first-come, first-served basis.
