Avalanche takes third
at hoops tournament
The Olympic Avalanche, a basketball team of seventh- and eighth-grade girls from across the Olympic Peninsula, took third overall at the Crusader Classic at Eastside Catholic High School in Sammamish on Oct. 18.
The Avalanche opened with a win against Mount Si, a 41-12 rout Saturday afternoon. Neah Bay’s Krista Johnson led the team with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Mariah Frazier added 13 points, 17 rebounds and three steals. Sequim’s Haleigh Harrison (eight rebounds) and Alexis Besand (seven rebounds) came off the bench to help on the boards.
The Avalanche fell to Eastside Select on Saturday night, 49-41. Down 13 points at halftime, the Avalanche went on a 14-0 run, thanks to sharp three-point shooting from Johnson and Krissy Marvelle. The Avalanche had a 41-40 lead before faltering. Eastside hit 11-of-17 free throws while the Avalanche hit just 6-of-18 from the charity stripe. Johnson led the Avalanche with 15 points and 10 steals while Frazier added 16 rebounds.
Gates’ goals lead NWAACC
Brittany Gates, a 2008 graduate of Sequim High School, is tied for the lead in goals in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges with 15 scores.
Gates, a freshman at Olympic College in Bremerton, is tied with Walla Walla’s Tahlia O’Loughlin for the conference lead.
Gates’ Rangers are 4-8-2 after going 1-17 last season.
Marcy gets first
races as Cardinal
Stephanie Marcy, a red-shirt freshman at Stanford University, ran in her first official Stanford race this fall after sitting out the 2007-2008 season.
In her first race, the University of San Francisco Invitational on Aug. 30, Marcy finished 11th overall, third on the team, as Stanford took fourth out of nine teams. She finished the 5,000-
meter course in 18:44.
On Sept. 27, Marcy finished 21st overall, sixth on the team, as Stanford easily won the 10-team Stanford Invitational.
Marcy is a 2007 graduate of Sequim High School. While a Wolf, she won the Washington 2A cross country championship and Borderclash meet in 2006, and won the 1,600-meter 2A title in track & field in 2007.
Stanford is ranked No. 6 in the most recent NCAA women’s cross country poll; the University of Washington is No. 1 while
Oregon is No. 2.
Local youths punt, pass, kick at competition
Elijah Stewart of Port Angeles won the boys 8-9 division at the Punt, Pass & Kick sectional championship South Sound Stadium in Lacey on Oct. 12, one of several Port Angeles athletes in action.
Lenora Hofer took fourth place in the girls 12-13 division, barely missing the medal stand. Robert McMahan competed in the boys’ 12-13 division but did not medal.
Stewart’s score is compared with other sectional champions throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska; age-group winners with the top five scores qualify to compete at the Seahawk Team Championship at Quest Field in Seattle this November.
Sequim batting cages adopts new fall hours
The Sequim Baseball U-18 batting and pitching facility has new hours until the fall prep seasons are complete. New hours are 3-6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The organization is accepting new memberships.

University Place
golfer gets ace
Brock Stewart of University Place sank a hole-in-one at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course Oct. 18.
Stewart used a 9-iron to drive the 139-yard eighth hole at the course. The feat was Stewart’s fourth ace overall.
