Schumacher used a 7 wood to drive the 150-yard 17th hole at The Cedars.

O’Mera, Zbaraschuk tee it up at tourney
Sequim High School golf stars Ryan O’Mera and Zoei Zbaraschuk take on some of the state’s best young golfers next week at the Washington State Junior Golf Association District I championship at The Cedars at Dungeness on July 27-29.
About 80 competitors are scheduled to tee up at The Cedars, with top golfers advancing to the state championships set for Glendale Golf & Country Club in Bellevue on July 29-31.
SARC offers free
circuit training
The Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center is offering a free circuit room orientation this summer at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Preregistration is required; maximum enrollment is six.
Participants must be at least 16 years old and may register by calling SARC at 683-3344, x16.
The first orientation is July 14 and they run through Aug. 27.
Local riders make nationals
Five equestrians from the Ranahan Pony Club qualified for the Pony Club Pacific Coast Championships, set for Aug. 10-16 in Auburn.
They are (by rider and event): Rio Mowbray, Training Dressage; Alison Powell, Junior Quiz; Emily Dybedal, Junior Quiz; Alicia Aunspach, Show Jumping; and Melissa Tilley, Novice Eventing.
Pony Club is represented throughout 30 countries. Programs are offered in dressage, eventing, show jumping, mounted games, tetrathlon, quiz, vaulting, foxhunting and polocrosse.

Saundra Kent tennis tourney set
The Peninsula Tennis Club hosts the 24th-annual Saundra Kent Memorial Tennis tournament, scheduled for two weekends this summer.
The weekend of July 31-Aug. 2 features singles and super senior doubles( 62 years and older). The weekend of Aug. 7-9 features men’s, women’s and mixed doubles.
The first-round matches begin at 5:30 p.m. on July 31 and Aug. 7.
The tournament is at Erickson Park Courts at Fourth and Race streets in Port Angeles.
Cost is $20 per event for tennis club members, $25 per event for nonmembers. Funds raised go for college scholarships for local high school tennis players.

Cedars golf hosts youth summer camps
The Cedars at Dungeness (1965 Woodcock Road) is home to golf camps for youths on July 27-29.
One camp is for youngsters of ages 5-9; the other, for youths 10 to 16-years of age. The first two days of camp (July 27-28) runs from 9-11:30 a.m. for the younger set and 1-4 p.m. for the older golfers. Instruction focusing on putting, chipping, full swings and etiquette.
On July 29, the camp runs from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. for the youngsters, including a four-hole tournament, followed by a pizza party and awards. The older golfers meet from 2:30-6 p.m. with a tournament of up to nine holes (depending on ages), a cookout and awards.
Cost is $80; fee includes instruction, range balls, pizza party, awards, snacks and a gift. Space is limited to the first 45 registrants in each camp.

BMXers host
vendors, ‘life’ race
The Port Angeles BMX track hosts a vendor day and Race For Life starting at 11 a.m. on July 18 at the Port Angeles track near the Clallam County Fairgrounds.
Event participants are encouraged to sell their used BMX bikes.
An A-Pro BMX clinic with Daniel Mazuti is scheduled for 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; cost is $25.
Sign-up for the Race For Life is scheduled for 3-4 p.m. Cost is a $10 donation and $10 race fee. The race is open to all riders.
A Strongman exhibition is slated for 1-3 p.m.

Robin Hill fun run set
A five-kilometer fun run/walk is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Robin Hill Park.
The race requires no participation fee; no awards are given. Runners and walkers are asked to meet in the Pinnell Road parking lot.

Open trail event set
The Wild Angels 4-H Horse Club of Jefferson County is hosting an open competitive trail trial at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25.
The competition is held at property off Discovery Road between Highway 20 (Four Corners Road) and Discovery Golf Club in Port Townsend. There will be signs out to direct participants to a horse trailer parking area and trails.
The trail trial consists of a variety of obstacles; riders are scored on how well they and their horse negotiate each obstacle.
Early bird pricing is $20 per person for entry forms postmarked by July 17. Cost after July 17, including day of competition, is $25.
Awards are presented shortly after the last rider finishes the course. Concessions will be available.

Crab, Crabette
tournament set
The 36th annual Crab & Crabette Mixed Chapman golf tournament is scheduled for Aug. 8-9 at The Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road.
Entry fee is $260 per couple.
The tourney features prizes totaling more than $3,500 (based on a full 80-team field).
The format is a 36-hole mixed Chapman with gross and net prizes available.
Special events include a putting contest, team KPs each day, horse race and daily honey pots.
Saturday’s play begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start, putting contest at 4:30 p.m. and crab feed at 6 p.m.
Sunday’s play begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start and hosted lunch at 1:30 p.m. with awards to follow.

VanGesen wins
Legends race at Yakima
The Port Angeles-based Righteous Racing team, with driver Jon VanGesen of Port Orchard, won the Legends race at Yakima Speedway on July 4.
The win is VanGesen’s first overall win of the 2009 racing season. This season Van-Gesen has won the Masters Division in two main events at Evergreen Speedway and the Wenatchee Valley Super Oval.
VanGesen was the 2007 outlaw compact champion and the 2008 Northwest Legends semi pro "Rookie of the Year" and championship runner up. Crew members include Jerry West, Jacob VanGesen, Ian VanGesen and Steve Deets, who assist with repairing and setting up the car for each race. VanGesen is currently leading the Masters Division points race for the 2009 NW Legends championship.
‘Junkyard’ volleyball camp set for July
The Sequim Junkyard Dawgs Volleyball camp is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on July 28-31 at the Sequim High School gymnasium, 601 N. Sequim Ave.
The camp is open to
Sequim players entering grades 9-12 this fall; a few spaces remain and are to be filled on a first-come, first-paid basis. Players from other schools may register after July 10.
Middle-school players may register and participate if camp organizers receive at least nine registrants of those grade levels (6-8).
Cost is $205.
