Wilder Seniors play on
Wilder Baseball’s Senior team is playing on, thanks to some good fortune. Wilder, a team of top prep stars from Sequim, Port Angeles and Port Townsend, went 1-3 at the state Babe Ruth tourney in Port Angeles earlier this month and looked to be out of the postseason. But a team representing Montana found it couldn’t make the Pacific Northwest Senior Babe Ruth regional tournament in Vancouver, Wash., that began July 21, according to Wilder Senior manager Mike Politika.
Wilder started play at the tourney with a team from Gillette, Wyo., Monday. If Wilder advances as one of the top two teams in the five-team division, it will play at 9:30 a.m. or 12:15 p.m. on July 26, with the tourney title game at 5 p.m.
Berg earns PDN honors
Eli Berg, a junior midfielder for Sequim High’s boys soccer squad, was selected as the All-Peninsula Boys Soccer MVP by the Peninsula Daily News. Berg scored two goals and assisted on 11 others for a squad that went 13-3 league record and 14-5 overall.
Berg’s coach Dave Brasher was named All-Peninsula Coach of the Year after leading the Wolves to a third-place finish in league and a district playoff berth.
Other Wolves named to the All-Peninsula team include sophomore forward Thomas Winfield, senior midfielder Nicholas Baird, sophomore goalkeeper Austin Sanford and a trio of senior defenders: Hector Baylon, Bailey Collins and Lijah Sanford. Senior midfielder Ron Welches was named an honorable mention.
Harp gets first ace
Rodney Harp of Sequim sank his first hole-in-one, acing hole No. 8 at The Cedars at Dungeness on July 21.
Harp used an 8-iron to drive the 130-yard hole.
Gear up for Deer Run
The Navy is holding Deer Run at Naval Magazine Indian Island on Saturday, July 26. Beginning at 10 a.m., participants of all ages will run and walk their way on a 5k (3.10-mile) terrain course through a forested area on the southern end of Indian Island. There also is a one-mile course on paved roads available.
The entry fee is $20 with a T-shirt or $15 without a T-shirt. For participants ages 16 and younger, the fee is $15 with a T-shirt and free without a T-shirt. Register online at www.active.com or in person.
