Storm King 95 wins again

The Storm King 95 girls’ U18 soccer team extended its winning streak to four games with a 5-2 home victory on Sunday, Feb. 24, versus the Velocity FC 95 from Cascade Soccer Club of Renton.

The win put the Storm King 95s into third place in the North Puget Sound U18 league.

Ten minutes into the game, Shelby Lott switched from a defensive midfield position to striker and the move paid off soon after. Midfielder Maeve Harris received a pass out of the back, dribbled through the midfield and sent the ball through to Lott who timed her run perfectly to beat the offsides trap. Lott then coolly finished to the far left post.

Four minutes later, the Lott-Harris duo teamed up again for a carbon copy of the first goal.

The defensive unit of Vianey Cadenas, Audrey Shingleton, Mattie Clark, Justice Moore and Cami Raber held the Velocity to four first-half shots and Gretchen Happe closed out the first half with a shut-out.

Cadenas took over in goal in the second half and Lauren Bell stepped into the creative role by racking up three assists. Her first came at 57 minutes when Waverly Shreffler connected a header off Bell’s corner kick; Shreffler’s initial header hit the crossbar but she headed in her own rebound.

Later, Bell found Gretchen Happe past the Velocity’s defensive line for a goal.

The final Storm King score came when Bell again passed a through ball to Heidi Veriede, who used her speed to outpace the Velocity defenders.

Velocity scored two goals late in the game for a 5-2 final.

Storm King 99 plays home at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, at Peninsula College’s Sigmar Field.
