Wolves tennis doubles team Anna Prorok, a senior, and Hannah Gauthun, a sophomore, faced stiff competition on May 24 for their first trip to the 2A Girls State Doubles Championships, played at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

In the first round, the Sequim girls played returning state competitors Carley Schmidt and Carly Riehl of West Valley in Yakima but lost 6-2, 6-3. Riel and Schimidt went on to win fourth place. 

In the consolation bracket, Sequim played it close with familiar competitors Kristi and Karli Floyd of Franklin Pierce. Gauthun and Prorok lost to the duo at districts in a match for the third seed to state. 

Sequim lost two close sets at state 7-5 and 7-6 (5). 

Despite being eliminated, this was one of only a few tournaments the girls have played together having played singles most of the season. 

Coach Mark Textor said the girls played well and he’s proud of how they performed. 

He said the girls performed much better the second time against Karli and Kristi Floyd and gave themselves a great chance to win. 

“It could have gone either way,” he said. We really scrapped.”

Even though the girls didn’t win any matches, Textor said the girls had a great time. 

“A lot of going to state is about the experience of staying in hotels and going out to dinner and seeing the city,” he said. 

Next fall, Textor plans to take a one-year leave of absence from teaching and coaching the high school boys’ and girls’ teams. The school district has yet to hire a replacement, but Textor said he’s definitely not done coaching and is taking a year off to chase some new adventures.

If possible, he’d like to return to coaching for a 17th year if the position is open.
