The 28th Washington State Senior Men’s and the 7th Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championships start this morning (Sept. 23) at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course in Sequim.
The two championships will be held concurrently over 54 holes of stroke play, and are conducted by the Washington State Golf Association.
Among the players to watch in the Senior Amateur is three-time defending champion Tom Brandes of Bellevue, who will be gunning for his fourth consecutive victory. He is the four-time defending WSGA Senior Men’s Player of the Year. So far this year, Brandes has qualified for both the U.S. Senior Amateur and the U.S. Senior Open, and finished runner-up in the Pacific Northwest Master-40 and the Pacific Northwest Senior Men’s Amateur. He has also been selected to represent Washington in the upcoming USGA Men’s State Team Championship.
Among those challenging Brandes will be past champions Larry Daniels of Seattle (2009) and Keith Crimp of Ellensburg, Wash. (2010). Crimp has already won this year’s Washington State Senior Men’s Champion of Champions. Also competing in the strong field are John Gallacher of Burnaby, B.C. who last week won the Pacific Northwest Men’s Senior Team Championship (with partner Gudmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody, B.C. who is competing in this week’s Washington State Senior Men’s Championship); and Tom Hale of Lakewood, who has already won this year’s Washington State Men’s Mid-Amateur.
In the Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship, last year’s champion Jeff Remington of Edmonds, Wash., returns to defend his title. Remington had also won the 2003 Washington State Senior Amateur.
Challenging Remington will be Ron Peterson, who won this championship in 2011 and 2012.
