The streak continues.

After a league championship as seventh-graders, this year’s Sequim Middle School eighth-grade boys’ varsity basketball squad is undefeated with just one game remaining on the schedule.

The Timberwolves got a scare but held on for a 48-46 win against Stevens High School (Port Angeles) on Jan. 22, Sequim’s third tough road game in a row, to run the team’s season mark to 9-0.

Sequim took a 21-13 lead at halftime but Stevens responded with a 21-0 run led by Marshall Elliott’s 23 points and Gene Peppard’s 12 rebounds.

Sequim answered back with the hot-handed shooting of Jason Brocklesby to take a late lead.

"The guys came alive and played the kind of basketball we are capable of playing," Sequim coach Kris Henrikson said.

Stevens’ Brian Defrang tied the game in regulation with free throws but Sequim prevailed, 48-45.

Tim Guan nailed some pressure free throws late in overtime, while Austin Law grabbed a critical rebound near the end of overtime to help seal the victory for Sequim. Brocklesby led the team with 16 points and Dylan Eckoff added 13 points.

"I’m really proud of these guys – we’ve had adversity with some injuries and players missing some games," Henrikson said. "The challenges have been met and the team has really stepped up to take on new positions and rallying to find a way to come together to win."

The Timberwolves host Forks on Jan. 29.
