First a traffic snarl, then two snarling opponents.

Rerouted from their scheduled tournament in Oregon, Peninsula College’s women got a less-than-cordial welcome at the South Puget Sound Crossover tourney in Olympia, dropping a pair of contests to see their season mark drop to 4-5.

In the opener Friday night, the Yakima Valley Yaks made quick work of the Pirates, rolling a 55-27 halftime lead into a 97-58 victory.

Sam Flett led the Pirates with 23 points while teammate Krystal Tolliver had 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists, but Peninsula simply couldn’t overcome 43 turnovers leading to 43 Yakima points.

Nicole DeRosier led the Yaks with 17 points in 20 minutes as all 12 Yakima players got in the scoring book. Yakima had 28 steals.

Peninsula fared a little better in the Saturday contest but nonetheless couldn’t come away with a victory, falling 74-50 to Highline.

Flett once again led the Pirates, scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Brittany Bridges had 11 points and Britney Yamane added 10 points.

Peninsula shot just 21-of-73 (28.8 percent) from the field. The Pirates gave up 27 points off 21 turnovers and converted 24 Highline miscues into just 10 points.

Lauren Hill led Highline with 18 points.

The Pirates are back on the court Dec. 30 against Tacoma, barring inclement weather. Peninsula hosts Shoreline Jan. 3, their first NWAACC conference contest.
