Sequim High School’s new running track made its official debut March 20, welcoming six schools to a seven-team Olympic League meet, the first held in Sequim since 2021.
The former track was demolished last July and replaced at a cost of $363,299 under the district’s Capital Projects Levy that voters approved in 2021. The pole vault runway also was relocated for about $39,000, and stadium lights were replaced for about $85,000.
The track was last resurfaced in 1996, with manufacturers recommending replacement every 10 years.
Sequim’s head coach Brad Moore said there were high spirits among athletes and coaches with it being the first home meet in nearly four years when meets were stopped for safety concerns due to ruts in the track surface.
“All the teams chipped in … and it was so cool,” he said of running the meet. “The smaller schools were out there and were so thankful to come out and compete.”
Sequim boys second
Port Angeles won the boys team competition with 74 points, led by sophomore sprinter Liam Wilson’s wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes (11.91 and 12.09 seconds, respectively).
Wilson also joined classmates Hunter Eller, Logan Wilson and Gregory Jourdan III for a win in the 4×100 relay in 46.54.
Port Angeles’ 4×400 relay squad also earned a victory as Kaiden Point, Conner Enders, Easton Dempsey and Richard Peterson teamed up to win in 3:47.
Roughriders’ junior Brody Pierce set a stadium record in the triple jump of 41 feet, 7.5 inches, 2 inches better than Olympic’s Darrelle White, a triple jump state champion, in 2018.
Keatyn Hoch also fared well in the high jump, clearing 5-4 for the Riders.
Sequim ended up second in the boys meet with 41 points. Sophomore Reid Randall was a winner in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, while Wolves senior Sean Southard’s winning javelin throw totaled 148 feet, 9 inches.
Southard was second in the 100 sprint, just 0.7 seconds off Liam Wilson’s winning mark.
Sequim freshman Taylor Wolselgel was a runner-up in the high jump, and sophomore Adrian Osborne finished second in the 400 run (56.74).
East Jefferson’s boys dominated the long distance portion of the meet as sophomore Josh Yearian won the 1,600 in 4:43.18 and classmate Noah Isenberg took the 3,200 in 10:38.24.
Clallam Bay had two winners as sophomore Coletyn Hull won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet while William Hull claimed the 300 hurdles in 44.81.
Crescent sophomore John Lium hurdled his way to a win in the 110 hurdles in 22.24 and was third in the high jump at 5 feet.
Neah Bay junior Daniel Cumming claimed two throwing events, taking the discus with a personal-best throw of 105-10 and the shot put (40-3.5).
Girls win
The Sequim girls (45 points) edged Port Angeles (41) for the top spot in the team competition.
The Wolves were led by the winning 4×200 relay squad of Birdie Pyeatt, Dawn Hulstedt, Alexandria Morgan and Kylie Peters, while Peters, Pyeatt, Stella Dennis and Ruby Moxley-Horgan were runners-up in the 4×100.
Defending high jump state champion Clare Turella, a sophomore, cleared 4-10 to claim that event.
She won a state title as a freshman, a first for Sequim, by clearing 5-feet, 2-inches at the class 2A State Track and Field Championships last May and said she’s set a goal to jump 5’ 6” this season.
Moxley-Horgan, a freshman, debuted with a win in the long jump, clearing 14-10.5.
Ahrya Klinger added a victory in the pole vault, clearing 6-6 for the Wolves and edging freshman teammate Kaela Kate by 6 inches.
Senior Faerin Tait led the Riders girls with wins in the 200 meters in a personal-best 27.1 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 49.32. Tait also was second in the 100 hurdles in 17.81 and was part of Port Angeles’ winning 4×400 relay with Leia Larson, Storey Schmidt and Brooke Pierce (4:25.72).
Larson was tops in the 1,600 run, and freshman London Bourland won the 400 meters for the Riders in 1:10.92.
Moore said he was pleased with Sequim’s results, and he saw some good individual performances, such as Southard, and Moxley-Horgan.
“There were a lot of young kids I haven’t seen compete yet, and seeing the marks coming through, there are some kids with real potential,” he said.
Moore noted Southard’s throw was good for this time of year; he took 16th in the javelin (141-1) at state in 2024.
“I think there’s a lot more there and for him to not throw far from his (personal record), I’m quite pleased with that,” he said.
Moore was also excited about Moxley-Horgan winning the long jump and running 13.8 seconds in the 100 meters.
“Jumping near 14 feet now, that’s a really good sign,” Moore said.
Sequim starts spring break on March 28, but the Wolves will travel to the Issaquah Icebreaker meet on March 29 and then return to competition with the April 17 home meet.
