Battling some wild weather on April 20, Sequim’s girls placed second and SHS’s boys took fourth in a five-team Olympic League meet in Poulsbo on April 20.
Leading the way for the Wolves’ girls was Jolene Vaara, who won both high jump (4-6) and long jump (14-8) events.
She was also part of the Wolves’ 4×200 relay team — along with Ivy Barrett, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader and Katie Morris — that posted a winning time of 1:54.
Barrett picked up a big win in the 400-meter race; her 1:04.70 time, a personal best, topped the 12-runner field by nearly three seconds.
Sequim swept the top three spots in the 3,200 meters, led by Liberty Mavy and Dawn Hulstedt (both 14:41).
Morris placed second in the 100-meter race in 14.20 seconds. Mavy placed second in the 800, in a personal best 2:58, while Bloomenrader placed second in the 1,600 meters (6:14). Krista Charters was runner-up in the shot put (22-7).
Sequim’s girls racked up 123 team points, behind meet winner North Kitsap (147) and head of Bremerton (106), Port Angeles (76) and North Mason (35).
On the boys’ side, a deep North Kitsap team defended its home turf with 158.5 team points, with Port Angeles (120) in second and Bremerton (115) in third. Sequim had 47.5 points, ahead of North Mason (44).
Individually, Sequim sophomore Andrew Brown earned two first-place finishes. He took top honors in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.74; he owns the seventh-fastest time among 2A boys with a 16.15 mark set in March. Brown also topped 5-8 in the high jump on April 20; he has a top-10 mark among 2A boys in that event as well, after clearing 6 feet in a previous meet.
Mirek Skov was third in the discus (96-6).
Sequim’s 4×400 relay team of Body Anderson, Cayden Beauregard, Andrew Keeler and Ari Skov placed second in 4:21.
Skov shines at Lil’ Norway Invitational
Sequim’s Skov clears 13-6 in the pole vault — a half-foot off his personal best and top 2A boys mark (14-0) of the season — at the Lil’ Norway Invitational in Poulsbo on April 22.
His brother Ari took fifth in the pole vault at 11-6.
Sequim’s Brown placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.49 seconds.
Sequim’s 4×200 relay team (Bloomenrader, Barrett, Vaara and Morris) took fourth in 1:52.76, and Sequim’s Ahrya Klinger was fourth in the pole vault (7-6).
In team points, the East Jefferson girls did best among local schools, coming in eighth with 42 points. Anacortes won the girls meet with 130 points. Sequim was 13th with 29 points and Port Angeles 14th with 28.
For the boys, Port Angeles finished ninth with 39 points. Sequim was 11th with 30 points and East Jefferson 13th with 17 points. North Kitsap won the boys meet with 94.5 points.
Looking ahead
Following the Olympic League junior varsity meet at Bainbridge on April 27, select Sequim athletes are at their final postseason prep meet, the Shelton Invitational, on Saturday, April 29.
The postseason kicks off for varsity athletes on May 4 and May 6, at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo. Top qualifiers advance to the West Central District meet, set for May 19-20 in Renton.
