Sequim’s youngest track and field starts shone brightly in league meets this spring.
Sequim Middle School’s Timberwolves swept the boys and girls divisions at the Olympic League Middle School championships, held May 21 at Port Angeles High School.
Sequim’s boys racked up 191 team points to out-pace Stevens of Port Angeles (150) and Blue Heron of Port Townsend (96).
The Timberwolf girls (214.5 points) were even more dominant, racing past Stevens (91.5), Blue Heron (80) and Neah Bay (77) for the title.
Triple winner Ruby Moxey-Horgan, an eighth-grader, paced SMS’s girls with wins in the 60-meter (7.89 seconds), 100-meter dash (13.92) and long jump (13-5) events.
Brooklyn Schmidt, a seventh-grader, won the 400-meter race in 1:07.33, while teammate Olivia Jameson, an eighth-grader, won the 800 meters in 2:44.48; both marks were personal bests.
Stella Dennis and Kalea Keate went 1-2 in the 75-meter hurdles (12.69 and 13.15) while Keate added a win in the 200-meter hurdles (34.57).
Sequim eighth-grader teammate Ryan Adkisson won the discuss with a 59-3 effort while fellow eighth-grader Brook Tennell won the javelin (by 2 inches) with a 56-5 throw. Madelyn Bower, a Sequim seventh-grader, won the shot put with a 25-foot, 10-inch toss.
Schmidt teamed up with fellow seventh-graders Harper Campbell, Emma Desjardins and Jordyn Julmist to win the 4×100 relay in 59.93 seconds.
Keate, Maia Brewer, Audrey Cabage and Kareleigh Swan raced to a win in the 4×400 relay race in 5:10.13.
SMS’s Cabage and Finley Rapelje also earned second place finishes — Rapelje in the 200-meter race (30.82) and Cabage in the 1600 meters (7:07).
On the boys’ side, Sequim seventh-grader Clayton Ernst placed first in the 200-meter race in 26.46 second and second at 100 meters in 12.75. He also took first in the long jump with a 16-7 mark.
SMS’s J. Wesley Schroeder swept the hurdles events, winning the 75-meter version in 11.45 seconds and the 200 hurdles in 28.89.
Eighth-grader Matias Divinsky won the 60-meter dash in 7.32 seconds.
Divinsky, Ernst, Schroeder and Garrett Eldridge teamed up to win the 4×100 relay in 53.22 seconds, 0.23 of a second faster than a Stevens quartet.
Sequim Andy Reynolds won the javelin with a 115-4 throw, 18 feet father than the next best mark.
Fellow eight-grader Taylor Wolslegel won the high jump, clearing 5 feet for the win.
SMS’s Cash Heiner, a seventh-grader,and Chevy Kelvy, and eighth-grader, went 1-2 in the shot put with throws of 31-6 and 31-1. Kelvy added a second place finish in the discus (68-8).
Eldridge added a second place finish in the 400 in 1:02.24.
