By leaps and bounds and sprints, a pack of Wolves is on its way to districts.
Led by female athlete of the meet Jolene Vaara, Sequim’s track and field squad earned seven league titles and 23 berths in the West Central District meet next week after a strong showing at the Olympic League meet in Poulsbo on May 4 and May 6.
Both of Sequim’s teams placed fourth in the eight-team Olympic League meet that includes seven 2A teams and 3A Bainbridge.
SHS’s girls scored 99 points, behind league meet champ Bainbridge (125), North Kitsap (111) and Olympic (101). Port Angeles was sixth (61 points).
On the boys’ side, North Kitsap won the meet with 162.5 points, followed by Port Angeles (147), Bremerton (122) and Sequim (68).
Vaara was just a quarter-inch off her own school record in winning the long jump in 17-1, and also won the high jump (5-0).
She was also part of two league champion relay teams, joining with Hi’ilei Robinson, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader and Ivy Barrett to win the 4×200 in 1:49.65, and closing the meet with the 4×400 winning team with Robinson, Bloomenrader and Nikoline Updike with a 4:13.96 effort.
Barrett won the 400 meters in 1:01.15.
Andrew Brown picked up two league titles and three district berths. He won the 110 high hurdles in 15.97 and the high jump in 6-0.75, and placed second in the 300 hurdles in 41.53 seconds — each mark earning a personal record.
Mirek Skov punched his district ticket twice, placing second in the pole vault (13-6) and third in the discus with a personal best throw of 118 feet, 6 inches. Brother Ari Skov and teammate Brody Anderson are headed to districts as well, both clearing 11-6 in the pole vault.
Sophomore Sean Southard set a personal best in the 400 meters, racing to a second place finish in 52.53 seconds — and a top-10 2A boys mark — for a district berth, and added a district-qualifying finish in the 800 meters (2:03.26, fifth).
Ayden Humphries picked up a district qualifying mark in the long jump (19-2, fifth).
On the girls’ side, Bloomenrader earned two district berths, placing third in both 400 (1:03.49) and 800 (2:27), while Barrett picked up a second district berth in the 200 (27.39, fourth).
Liberty Mavy earned her first district meet qualifying mark, finishing fourth in the 3,200 meters in 13:26.
Also heading to districts is Katie Morris in the 100 (fifth, in a personal best 13.93), Dawn Hulstedt in the 1,600 (5:48, seventh) and both Ahrya Klinger and Laila Sundin in the pole vault (8-0 and 6-9, third and sixth).
