Track & Field: Hutchison breaks meet record at Lil’ Norway

Sequim High senior Sarah Hutchison set a new meet record in the pole vault (10 feet) and teammate Josh Cibene took first in the same event on the boys' side as 36 SHS athletes — 20 girls and 16 boys — competed at Poulsbo's Lil' Norway Invitational on April 12.

So much for shaking off that Spring Break rust.

Sequim High senior Sarah Hutchison set a new meet record in the pole vault (10 feet) and teammate Josh Cibene took first in the same event on the boys’ side as 36 SHS athletes — 20 girls and 16 boys — competed at Poulsbo’s Lil’ Norway Invitational on April 12.

Competing against 12 other schools including Central Kitsap, Shorewood Christian, Bainbridge, Tacoma Baptist and a number of Olympic League schools, Sequim’s boys and girls both placed fourth in team standings. On the boys’ side, Olympic (118 points) outpaced Central Kitsap (111.5) and North Kitsap (101.5), followed by Sequim (97) and Kingston (84.5). On the girls’ side, the host North Kitsap Vikings easily took the team title (162.5), followed by Central Kitsap (123), Olympic (93.5), Sequim (79.5) and Tacoma Baptist (58).

Sophomore Waverly Shreffler scored a second-place finish in the 400 (62.67 seconds), a personal best, and Hutchison took second in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 100 hurdles.

For Sequim’s boys, sophomore Oscar Herrera had a first-place finish in the 300 hurdles (41.89 seconds) and took third in the 100 hurdles (16.40), both personal bests. Herrera’s 300 hurdles time is the ninth-best in the Class 2A Division this season, according to athletic.net.

Fellow soph C.J. Daniels took second in the 1600 meters (4:37), edged out of first by Klahowya’s Trent Mazelli by 0.63 seconds, and took third in the 800 meters (2:05).

Sequim’s 4×100 relay team — Alex Barry, Dylan Chatters, Jason Spring and Kane Stoddard — took second with a 46.33-second finish behind Olympic’s relay squad.

Sophomore Jackson Oliver was fourth in the high jump (5-10).

The Wolves are back in action today, April 16, as they take on Kingston’s Buccaneers and North Mason’s Bulldogs in Kingston. Sequim is at Bremerton April 24.
