Let the second season begin.
Sequim’s track and field athletes finished the regular season in a familiar spot — in Port Angeles, where their 2014 season began — as the Wolves’ boys and girls both earned splits with their counterparts from Olympic and Port Angeles.
Sequim’s boys topped P.A. 110-33 but fell to Olympic 78-73 to finish the campaign at 7-1.
Sequim’s girls edged Olympic 80-77 but dropped an 83-76 decision to the host Roughriders, finishing the league dual meet season at 6-2.
Oscar Herrera led SHS’s boys with a double win in the hurdles, topping the field in the 110- (16.29) and 300-meter (42.90) versions. Alex Barry won the javelin, second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the long jump and triple jump.
Sequim’s long distance crew had a strong meet, with C.J. Daniels and Mikey Cobb going 1-3 in the 1,600 meters while Brendon Despain and Peter Ohnstad did the same in the 3,200 meters; Port Angeles’ Peter Butler placed second in both events.
Josh Cibene cleared 12 feet in the pole vault to match a season best and win the event while Nick Kovach had a personal best 10-6 mark to take third place.
Ohnstad (800), Dylan Chatters (400), Jackson Oliver (high jump), Brendan Lauritzen (javelin) and Austin Sampson (discus) each had second-place finishes.
On the girls’ side, Waverly Shreffler took first in the 400 meters, second in the 200 and third in the 100 to lead Sequim’s squad.
Sarah Hutchison took first place in the 100-meter hurdles as Sequim swept the top four spots, along with Katelyn Rogers, Mattie Clark and Molley Earley.
Hutchison added a win in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet. Teammate Emily Van Dyken did the same to take second place.
Emily Webb edged Port Angeles’ Annika Pederson for top honors in the 3,200-meter distance run.
Sequim’s 4×400 relay team of Hutchison, Shreffler, Gretchen Happe and Hannah Hudson topped the field with a 4:20.33 mark. Heidi Vereide was second in the long jump.
Soaring in Shelton
Competing against more than 30 other schools from across the region, Sequim athletes set several personal and season bests at the Shelton Invite on Saturday, despite wet conditions.
Daniels, Sequim’s miler, was placed into the varsity mile event as an alternate and (literally) ran away with a fourth place medal, scorching the lanes with a 4:26 finish.
Shreffler ran a personal best 1:00.93 in the 400-meter race (second in the freshman/sophomore final), the top mark in the Olympic League so far, and Sequim’s 4×400 team (Happe, Hutchison, Shreffler and Vereide) placed ninth with a season-best 4:17.34.
On the boys’ side, Sequim’s 4×400 team of Barry, Chatters, Herrera and Kane Stoddard ran to a 3:39.04 finish, their best mark of the season.
Cibene was sixth in the pole vault with another 12-foot mark while Herrera broke the 16-second barrier in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.94, a personal best. He also set a personal best in the 300 hurdles. Despain was third in the freshman/sophomore one-mile race.
Sequim’s boys placed 13th overall out of 34 teams.
Looking ahead
The Olympic League track and field championships are set for Saturday, May 10, at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo.
Top finishers there advance to the league sub-district meet set for May 17 in Bremerton.
