Watch that next step — it’s a doozy.
A pack of Sequim High Wolves is headed to the West Central District 2A meet this week after posting top marks at a blustery sub-district meet May 14 in Bremerton.
After seeing 22 of 25 competitors earn district berths last week, those Sequim athletes return to Bremerton High on May 20-21, with the top six competitors in each event advancing the state 2A meet.
On May 14, Sequim’s Oscar Herrera and Waverly Shreffler were dual event winners to lead the way to districts.
On the girls’ side, Shreffler broke the one-minute mark in the 400 meters (59.64) for an easy win. Shreffler and teammate Audrey Shingleton went 1-3 in the 800-meter race, finishing in 2:26 and 2:27, respectively. Shingleton added a second-place finish behind Port Angeles sophomore Gracie Long in the 1,600 meters.
Elizabeth Sweet broke Sequim’s freshman pole vault record by clearing 9 feet for third place and teammate Kiara Pierson was right behind her with a personal-best 8-6 mark, finishing fourth.
Pierson anchored SHS’s winning 4×400 relay team (4:17) who, along with Shreffler, Emma Beeson and Gretchen Happe, outpaced North Kitsap by nearly five seconds.
Setting personal bests were Sequim’s Katelyn Rogers in the high jump (4-8, fourth place) and Elizabeth Rosales in the 3,200-meter race (12:51, fourth).
Mattie Clark raced to third place in the 100-meter race (17.56) while Rogers (17.78) was fourth.
Sequim’s 4×200 relay team took third and 4×100 team was fourth.
Overall, Sequim’s girls were third in the seven-team sub-district meet with 107.5 team points, behind North Kitsap (163) and Olympic (156.6).
For Sequim’s boys, Herrera once again broke the 15-second mark in the 110-high hurdles (14.95) and topped the 300-meter hurdle field in 40.15, cruising to victories in both events.
In another matchup of last year’s top two state 2A competitors, high jumpers Max English of Kingston and Sequim’s Jackson Oliver didn’t challenge the slick conditions and still finished in the top two, with English cresting 5-10 and Oliver topping 5-8.
Oliver added a third-place finish in the 800-meter race (2:01).
SHS senior Logan Habner set a personal best in the triple jump with a 39-foot, 10.75-inch effort, good for third place, while Wendall Lorenzen raced to a personal-best 10:20 mark in the 3,200 meters, finishing fourth.
SHS’s boys 4×400 team (Habner, Herrera, Curtis Gorr and Silas Isenberger) took second in 3:34, behind Olympic.
SHS’s boys tied with Port Angeles for fifth in the seven-team sub-district meet with 60 team points. North Kitsap (197) won the meet handily.
