With just one home meet remaining on the 2013 schedule, Sequim’s boys made the most of it by taking down one of the league’s top teams.

The Wolves got strong performances from upperclassmen and younger athletes alike as they edged Olympic’s Trojans by just two points (80.5-78.5) on April 17.

Sequim also easily outpaced a shorthanded Port Angeles squad (22 points).

Jayson Brocklesby led the charge with first-place finishes in the 400-meter sprint (52.88), high jump (6-0) and, with teammates Christian Miles, Lopaka Yasumura and Dylan Chatters, in the 4×100 relay.

Yasumura topped the field in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 9.5 inches — a personal best and seventh-best mark in the class 2A rankings in Washington this season. He also took second in the 100 meters, topped only by Clallam Bay’s Justin Welever, who didn’t officially score in the league meet.

Sophomore Josh Cibene topped the field in the pole vault (10-6) as did fellow soph Alex Barry in the triple jump (38-5). Barry took second in the javelin with a 150-foot, 2-inch hurl — a personal best and top-25 state 2A mark.

Chatters and Herrera joined Judah Breitbach and Hamish Peers to take top honors in the 4×400 relay.

McMullin leads Wolves

On the girls’ side, Jasmine McMullin was a triple winner, earning victories in the triple and long jump events and helping the 4×200 squad take first, along with teammates Hannah Hudson, Sarah Hutchison and Heidi Vereide.

The wins weren’t quite enough, however, as Port Angeles (78.5 points) topped Sequim (66.5) and Olympic (42).

Sophomore Emily VanDyken won the pole vault (8-0) and freshman Waverly Shreffler outpaced the pack in the 400-meter race, edging Hudson by less than a second.

Hutchison scored a win in the 100 hurdles (17.24) and was second in the 300 hurdles (50.55) to Olympic’s Ashli Payne, a state competitor in the event last season.

Freshman Gretchen Happe was third in the 800-meter race, as was frosh Audrey Shingleton in the 1,600-meter race, McMullin in the 200, Andria Bower in the shot put and Sarah Henry in the discus.

Looking ahead

Sequim is back in action today, April 24, as they take on Port Townsend and host Klahowya in Silverdale. Select Wolves compete at the 53rd Shelton Invitational on Saturday, April 27.

The Olympic League meet is slated for Saturday, May 4, at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo.
