Thanks to spring break and a quirk in the 2014 schedule, Sequim’s Wolves had three weeks between Olympic League meets.
They didn’t show much of the proverbial rust against Kington and Nortmh Mason, however.
C.J. Daniels, Sarah Hutchison and Waverly Shreffler won two events each as Sequim’s boys (4-0) and girls (4-0) stayed unbeaten on the young season, topping Kingston and North Mason on April 16 in Kingston.
On the boys’ side, Daniels won the 800-meter and 3,200-race while teammate Brendon Despain won the 1,600 as Sequim dominated the middle and long distance runs. Sequim’s boys outpaced North Mason 87-51 and blew by Kingston, 93.5-50.5
Joshua Cibene won the boys pole vault with an 11-foot mark while Wolf Jackson Oliver set a personal best with a 6-foot high jump to win the event.
Oscar Herrera placed second in both 110- and 300-meter hurdles races behind Kingston junior Garrett Rouser and Sequim’s Dylan Chatters was second in the 100- and 400-meter races and took third in the 200-meter race.
Sequim’s girls dominated the host Buccaneers 102-41 and edged North Mason’s Bulldogs, 88-61, due in large part to Shreffler. The sophomore nearly pulled a rare triple, winning both 200 and 400-meter races and placing second in the 100-meter sprint.
Hutchison earned wins in the 100 hurdles — just 0.02 second better than teammate Mattie Clark — and clearing 9-6 in the pole vault.
Sequim’s girls 4×200 and 4×400 relay team took top honors, as did Emily Van Dyken in the triple jump.
Earning second-place finishes were Hannah Hudson in the 400, Gretchen Happe in the 800, Emily Webb in the 3,200, Cheryl Armstrong in the discus, Katelyn Rogers in the high jump, Heidi Vereide in the long jump and Madelynn Potts in the triple jump.
Athletes from Neah Bay and Clallam Bay also participated in the meet.
Sequim is back in action on April 24 as they take on North Kitsap and their hosts, the Bremerton Knights.
Strong finishes at ‘Add It Up’
A handful of Sequim athletes competed in the Add It Up Invite at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma on Saturday, taking on competitors from 4A schools Mariner, Puyallup, Auburn and Auburn-Riverside high schools, plus Decatur (3A) and Sultan (2A).
Sequim’s boys came in second with 37 team points, three behind champ Mariner.
Alex Barry won the triple jump with a personal record 42 feet, 17.5 inches — the eighth-best jump in the 2A classification in Washington this season. He also came in second in the javelin.
Jackson Oliver won the high jump (5-8) and Brendon Despain won the 3,200-meter race.
Sequim’s 4×100 relay team of Dylan Chatters, Kane Stoddard, Oscar Herrera and Jason Springer took top honors. C.J. Daniels took second in both 800- and 1,600-meter races while Herrera was second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. Austin Sampson was second in the discus.
On the girls’ side, Sequim tied for fifth place with Auburn-Riverside with 11 team points; Decatur took the girls’ title.
Sequim pole vault duo Sarah Hutchison and Emily Van Dyken shared first place with 8-0 marks while Heidi Vereide was second in the long jump with a 15-3.25 mark, nearly a foot better than her previous best. Hutchison teamed with Taylor Forderer, Gretchen Happe and Mercedes Woods to place second in the 4×400 relay and Mikayla Simonson took third in the javelin with a personal best (81-4).
