A deep Sequim roster helped the Wolves sweep a multi-team Olympic League meet in Silverdale on April 20, edging Bremerton by a few points in both boys’ and girls’ divisions.
Sequim’s girls racked up 156 team points, out-pacing Bremerton (149), North Mason (88), Forks (63), Olympic (47) and Chief Leschi (17).
On the boys’ side, the Wolves tallied 14 points, ahead of Bremerton (129), Olympic (121), North Mason (73), Forks (43) and Cheif Leschi (18).
Riley Pyeatt raced to a win in the girls’ 800 (2:22.50) as the Wolves swept the top three places; Pyeatt was followed by Eve Mavy (2:27.46) and Kaitlin Bloomenrader (2:28.83).
Pyeatt added a win in the 1,600 meters, in a season-best 5:22.17 — the eighth-best mark in the state among 2A girls.
Sequim’s Rileigh VanDyken won both pole vault (7-0) and triple jump (27-2) events, and was second in the 300 hurdles (57.11).
Hi’ilei Robinson scored a win in the 200-meter race with a personal record 28.46 mark.
Emily Carlier second in the 100 with a 13.82 mark. Anastasia Updike was runner-up in the 400, finishing in 1:06.74, while her sister Nikoline Updike placed second in the 3,200 meters (15:27.14).
Sequim’s girls nearly swept the relays, winning the 4×400 (4:26.07) and 4×200 (1:52.86) and second in the 4×100 (59.01). The Wolves’ 4×200 relay mark set by Bloomenrader, Mavy, Pyeatt and Robinson is the ninth-fastest 2A mark in the state.
On the boys side, Colby Ellefson cruised to wins in the 1,600 meters (4:49.91) and the 3,200 meters (10:37.96).
Adrian Brown won the 300 hurdles in 44.30 seconds and placed second in the 110 hurdles, a 16.15-second mark that is ninth-fastest in the state among 2A boys.
Sequim’s boys also took first in the 4×400 relay, winning with a mark (3:47.5) nearly 8 seconds faster than the runner-up team from Olympic.
Ari Skov was second in the triple jump, with a personal-best 33-2.5, and Henry Hughes placed second in the 400 (53.97).
Cayden Beauregard and Hughes each topped 8 feet in the pole vault, placing second and third respectively. Andrew Brown was second in the high jump (5-4).
The wins helped Sequim’s girls improve to 8-0-1 and SHS’s boys to 8-1, with the lone blemishes coming against 3A Bainbridge on April 14.
Wolves ‘Gear Up’ at Eason
More than a dozen Sequim athletes took part in the Gear Up Eason Invitational on April 23 in Snohomish. It highlighted the season debut of sophomore Jolene Vaara, who placed second in the high jump with a personal best 5-4 mark, tied for the best 2A girls state mark, and Pyeatt’s 800-meter winning time of 2.16.63 — the fastest 2A girls mark in the state by more than four seconds and third fastest mark in the state regardless of classification.
Pyeatt joined Bloomenrader, Mavy and Robinson to place second in the 4×400 (4:11.17) behind Redmond. Mavy and Bloomenrader added personal best marks in the 400 (5:25.50 and 5:34.87).
On the boys’ side, Adrian Brown set a personal record and placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.24, and set another PR and placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.14; brother Andrew set PRs in preliminaries of both hurdles events as well.
Ellefson set a PR in a crowded 1,600-meter field in 4:42.50 and another in the 3,200-meter race in 10:00.44; Jack Gladfelter of Port Angeles won the 3,200 in 9:32.68.
Coming up
Sequim takes on North Mason and host North Kitsap on April 28, and select athletes compete two days later at the Shelton Invitational.
The Wolves kick off the postseason at the Olympic League 2A meet set for May 5-7 in Belfair. Top athletes advance to the West Central District meet scheduled for May 20-21, also in Belfair. The state 2A-3A-4A meet is May 26-28 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
