Just one week in, and Sequim’s season already got a little longer.

The Wolves nabbed three district-qualifying times in a close loss (101-82) to North Kitsap on Dec. 9.

“It was a good meet — many of our swimmers and divers performed well,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said.

Senior Tommy Moores qualified for districts in both 100 free and 200 individual medley events.

Moores joined Doug Dunbar, Kris Petersen and Drew Rickerson in trimming seven seconds off their 200 medley relay time for the third qualifier.

Doug Dunbar picked up a win for Sequim in the 100 breaststroke.

Sequim’s divers went 1-2-3, with Connor Christianson taking top honors with 147.8 points.

Petersen took second place in both 50 free and 100 butterfly events.

“(He) is swimming sprint freestyle well for this early in the season and I expect him to lower his (50 free) time to a 25, maybe a 24 later in the season,” Moats said.

Sequim’s Matt Cays trimmed 30 seconds off his 200 freestyle time to two minutes, 44 seconds, good for third place overall in the event.

“I think overall the team is swimming and diving well at this point in the season,” Moats said.

Sequim was slated to host league foe Klahowya on Dec. 14 — results of the meet were unavailable at press time.

The Wolves are off until Jan. 6, when they take on cross-peninsula rival Port Angeles

Spartans take first meet

The 3A powerhouse Bainbridge Spartans played hosts to Sequim in their respective season-openers on Dec. 7, taking first place in all but one event in a 135-48 nonleague win.

Moores was Sequim’s lone winner, splashing to a win in the 50 free that qualifies him for districts.

Rickerson, a new swimmer, earned a district-qualifying swim in the 50 free and came close in the 100 free as well.

Sequim’s 200 medley relay team of Moores, Rickerson, Dunbar and Petersen also qualified for districts.

Moats also praised new swimmers Steve Dewey, Alex Rodriguez and Andrew Gunstone for their efforts.
