The matchup had all the makings of a classic battle between league powerhouses.
Sequim’s Wolves and North Kitsap’s Vikings did not disappoint.
North Kitsap middle blocker Briar Perez scored a point on a tip to break a 14-14 tie in the game’s decisive fifth set, and a controversial call on a Wolves drive to NK’s back line cinched it for the visiting Vikings on Oct. 2.
North Kitsap (4-0 in league, 6-0 overall) took control early with a 25-14 win in the first set, but Sequim (4-1, 6-1) got even in a back-and-forth second set that saw eight ties before Sequim won, 25-23.
In the third set, Sequim edged the Vikings 25-21. North Kitsap jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the fourth set and held off the Wolves for a 25-20 set victory, setting up the tie-breaking fifth set.
Sequim tied that fifth set at 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14 before finally falling.
The teams meet again on Oct. 21 in Poulsbo.
Sequim was slated to host Bremerton on Oct. 7 — results were not available at press time.
Olympic’s Trojans, who beat Port Angeles on Oct. 2 to remain unbeaten in league at 5-0, visit Sequim on Oct. 9.
The Wolves are at Kingston on Oct. 14 and host Port Angeles on Oct. 16.
