Two straight-set wins over league opponents last week keeps Sequim’s Wolves just behind league powerhouse North Kitsap and Bainbridge in the Olympic League standings.
On Sept. 24, the Wolves rode a wave of strong serving to knock off Olympic in Silverdale, 25-22, 26-24 and 25-18.
“It was actually a pretty close game,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman. said. “We had to play well, or at least consistent.”
The Wolves served 90 percent and had eight aces.
Rose Gibson served 9-for-10 with two aces, four kills, two blocks and nine digs, while Sophia Greenleaf served 13-for-13.
Kassi Montero had two aces, five digs and four kills, while Tiffany Lam had nine digs.
Kenzi Berglund had a big match, serving 13-for-13 with 17 assists and 13 digs. “She was hustling all over the place,” Webber Heilman said of Berglund.
Brianna Palenik served 6-for-6 with four kills and five digs, while Arianna Stovall had four kills, five digs and two blocks.
“And those were huge blocks; [Olympic] was hitting it hard,” Webber-Heilman said.
Two days later at home, Sequim (4-1 in Olympic League play, 4-2 overall) took care of business against their rivals, keeping Port Angeles winless for the season with a 25-19, 25-14, 25-19 victory.
“We were playing pretty good defensively; we knew they were going to tip a lot,” Webber Heilman said.
“[And] we were serving pretty well until the third game.”
Gibson was 22-of-24 serving with four aces and added a team-high eight kills.
Berglund was 9-of-10 on serves with three aces and fueled the offense with 20 assists.
“[The Roughriders] were hitting out of the back row — we weren’t ready for that — but we figured that out,” Webber Heilman said.
“Everybody got to play,” she said. “We wanted to win in three and we did that.”
Stovall added seven kills, and Tiffany Lam had a team-high nine digs.
Kenzie Moses led Port Angeles with four kills and two digs.
Sequim was scheduled to host league powerhouse North Kitsap on Oct. 1; results were not available at press time.
