A busy week saw Sequim’s Wolves (2-3) split a pair of league match-ups last week following a non-league, three-set loss to Jackson, a 4A school from Mill Creek, on Sept. 19.
Despite the loss, SHS coach Jennie Webber Heilman said it was the team’s best blocking match of the year as a team with 16 blocks, as Kendall Hastings led the Wolves with seven.
Hastings also had six kills, 10 digs and served 12-for-12 with a pair of aces. Jolene Vaara had six assists, five kills, five digs and two blocks.
Sammie Bacon served 5-for-5 with four kills and three blocks. Sydney Clark had seven assists and served 8-for-10. Sydney Hegtvedt served 11-for-11 with two aces and six digs, while Jordan Kidd served 9-for-10 with three aces and five digs.
The Wolves rebounded quickly, dominating from the outset to sweep the visiting Olympic Trojans at home on Sept. 20 (25-24, 25-12, 25-15).
“We were able to run a quicker offense with the improved free ball passing,” Webber Heilman said.
Hastings had a team-high seven kills and was 16-for-16 on serves with six aces.
The Wolves’ 20 aces were a season high and met Webber Heilman’s goal of 90 percent on serves (66-of-73).
Vaara had a solid all-around match with four kills, a team-best six assists and added four aces.
Webber Heilman praised Vaara and Clark (three assists, three aces, four digs) with getting hittable sets to Sequim’s front line.
SHS libero Mia Coudriet led the team with 10 digs, and Arianna Stovall added two blocks.
“Mia made some great defensive plays,” Webber Heilman said.
Sequim dropped a three-set decision at perennial league powerhouse North Kitsap (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) on Sept. 22.
Hastings paced the offense with seven kills while Stovall, Vaara and Anna Cowan had three kills apiece.
Vaara had nine assists, Kidd chipped in eight digs and Stovall added two blocks.
