Coach pushes for three-peat as 2A state academic champs

Following a tough season in 2012-2013, the Lady Wolves bowling team is poised to improve.
All of the team’s varsity squad return – seniors Kelsey Van Dyken, Mikayla Ahlin, Danyelle Wilson and Megan McAndie, and juniors Kaitlyn Jackson, Karli Furguson and Tenille Tosland.
So does the JV squad — Amanda Campell, Laurie Miller, Jayme McIntyre, Kaitlyn Walsh and Meghan Matthews.
Plenty of newcomers join the team, too, including freshman Erin Vig, who coach Randy Perry said will see some time on varsity because of her previous bowling experience. Also in the mix are Dakota Henderson, Maddie Matthews, Matisen Anders, Alice Petchteeb, Shyanne Terry, Molly Braaten, Angelica Grant and more likely to join further into the season.
One move that Perry anticipates giving the Wolves an advantage is moving matches to
Sequim.
The girls always practiced in Sequim Olympic Lanes but played their matches at Laurel Lanes in Port Angeles. Now they’ll practice and play in the same place.
“We should have a big advantage here in Sequim,” Perry said. “The lanes are old and the girls out of Kitsap County have never bowled on wood lanes so it’s going to be an eye opener for them. The atmosphere is much different, too.”
Four bowlers went to districts last year, captain Megan McAndie, Mikayla Ahlin, Tenille Tosland and Karli Furguson but Perry thinks the Wolves can send all five varsity spots to districts this year.
“It’s going to be hard to choose (for varsity),” he said. “They can all bowl and have done well under pressure but I can only take five and have about eight to work with.”
The biggest achievement for the bowling team was winning back-to-back Class 2A state academic championships with a 3.44 grade-point average, up the previous year with a 3.33 GPA.
Perry said it’s something he emphasizes and that the newcomers will have to step up and work hard to keep the tradition going.
