Home court? Sorry. Not in the past 16 years, and not this year.
Sequim High’s volleyball team continued its dominance of their Olympic Peninsula rival Port Angeles, sweeping the Roughriders in P.A. 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-15) on Oct. 9.
Megan Zumbuhl led the Wolves with nine kills and 17-of-17 serving while Maddy Zbaraschuk added seven blocks, five kills and two aces.
"Our girls were pretty confident – I think they always like to beat P.A.," said Sequim coach Jennie Webber, the Wolves’ leader since 1993. A Webber-led team hasn’t lost to the Roughriders in those 16 years, a streak the Wolves were happy to continue in their quest for the playoffs.
"Our hitting has been way more consistent than it has been (recently)," she said. "It was a nice win, because we didn’t feel very well after playing North Kitsap."
Kari Hankins added 15 assists and new starter Sierra Clark had three digs and a perfect 6-of-6 on serves.
"She’s been playing pretty well – she’s been playing pretty good defense (and) for her size she had pretty good hops," Webber noted.
Overall, the Wolves were 69-of-72 on serves, a 95.8-percent clip.
The Wolves (5-2 in Olympic League play, 6-4 overall) also got 11 stuff blocks, something their coach says is a big boost.
"Since … that Longview tournament we played way better," she said. "We got a chance to regroup (with practices). One thing we were really focused on was blocks. It gives the girls more confidence. All of a sudden when things were starting to work – it’s kind of cool."
Sequim cruised to a win earlier in the week with a drubbing of lowly Bremerton on Oct. 7.
Zumbuhl and Caitlin Pallai each had 11 kills while Diana Earl slammed six aces as Sequim swept the Knights 25-13, 25-16 and 26-24. Kari Hankins had 13 assists while her sister Sara added 12 assists.
"It was hard to keep interested," Webber joked.
The Wolves were scheduled to take on Olympic’s Trojans (6-1 in league, 7-3 overall) Oct. 14 – results were unavailable at press time. Sequim hosts Klahowya (0-8, 0-9) on Oct. 21 and Kingston (3-4, 3-7) two days later.
