All it took was a few days under a roof.
The Olympic League tournament, delayed more than a week because of poor weather in Belfair, finally finished Oct. 28 under cover in a Bremerton facility, with nine Sequim players advancing from singles and doubles brackets to the West Central District tournament.
The district tourney coincides with the end of the girls’ prep season in May.
Reed Gunstone and Mallory Maloney edged teammates Byron Boots and Michael Lee for the top seed to districts in doubles play.
Sequim’s David Lopes and Donovan Lee managed to secure the fifth and final doubles seed to districts last week. After dropping a consolation semifinal match in straight sets, the pair topped Klahowya’s Drew Fagan and Cory Stewart in a three-set classic: 6-3, 6-7 (5-7) and 7-5.
On the singles’ side, Sequim’s Joe Puntenney finished second to North Mason’s A.J. Barker and earned a spot at districts. Waylon Lam takes the league’s third seed after topping teammate David Richards in the consolation semis and shutting out Port Townsend’s Benny Ryweck 6-0 and 6-0 in the consolation finals.
Richards came back to edge Loren Klemsrud of Kingston 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) for the fifth and final singles berth.
