Wolves earn postseason Olympic League honors

Spring sports came to a close last week for the Sequim High Wolves, but a number of individuals came away with some all-Olympic league hardware after getting recognition from league coaches — headlined by a strong fastpitch softball contingent.

Fastpitch

Five Wolves named to the all-Olympic League first team: pitcher Lainy Vig, infielders Hannah Bates and Taylee Rome, and outfielder Mia Pozernick, and utility player Lexi King.

Earning all-league second team honors was catcher Mikki Green.

Sequim’s Sportsmanship Award went to first baseman Sammie Bacon.

Sequim finished 11-10 on the season, including a 2-1 mark at districts — falling short of a state 2A tourney berth by one game.

North Kitsap pitching ace Reese Anderson was named the league MVP. She paced the Vikings on the mound and at the plate, leading the Vikings to a West Central District title.

Seven Port Angeles players were named to the all-league list, including first-teamers Lily Halberg and Natalie Robinson.

Baseball

Sequim’s Toppy Robideau and Zeke Schmadeke, who helped fuel the Wolves push for a postseason berth, were named to the all-Olympic League second team.

Robideau, a senior, was named to the league’s list as a pitcher. He led the Sequim pitching staff in appearances (nine), innings pitches (43.3) and strikeouts (42). Among his top games was a complete game, seven-inning four-hitter on April 18 — a 4-1 win over Bremerton. He gave up one earned run and one walk while striking out eight.

Schmadeke, a freshman, was named to the league list as a utility player. He led the Wolves in a number of categories, including hits (26), batting average (.406) and stolen bases (eight) and tied for second on the team in runs scored (13).

Junior Ayden Holland received the Wolves’ Sportsmanship Award for 2023.

The Wolves went 11-10 on the season, winning all six non-league games.

North Kitsap junior pitcher Noah Sorensen was named the league’s MVP. Sequim got to Sorensen in a March 21 match-up; he struck out 14 and gave up just two hits and two walks in seven innings.

Port Angeles had three players named to the all-Olympic League first team, including senior pitcher Kole Acker, senior outfielder Eijah Floodstrom and sophomore infielder Alex Angevine.

Sequim’s Colin Feik made a big impact in his first season, earning a spot on the all-Olympic League first team.

The SHS freshman led a trio of Wolves on the all-league list, announced last week by area coaches.

Joining Feik on the squad were teammates Nova Barrett, a senior defender, and sophomore goalkeeper Nolan Valenzuela.

The three helped Sequim record two shutouts, earn a three-game win streak and beat Port Angeles at home during a 4-10 campaign.

Sequim forward Ethan Anderson earned the team’s Sportsmanship Award.

Port Angeles put four players on the all-league team: Matthew Miller and Landon Close (first team) and Hannes Spieker and Jacob Miller (second).

Damoni McKenna-Greenawalt of Bainbridge was named the league’s most valuable player.
