With the playoffs out of reach, Sequim players still had plenty of reasons to cheer Thursday night.
Ten of them, to be exact.
The Wolves’ 10 seniors took to Sequim High School’s soccer field for the last time last week, capping their homestand with a hard-fought, 3-1 loss to the Kingston Buccaneers on Oct. 23.
Senior Sunma Agostine opened the scoring 32 minutes into the match, but Kingston answered in less than a second, getting the equalizer from Alexis Ekonomakis.
With just two subs – more than they’ve had most of the season, the Wolves couldn’t keep up with the Bucs in the second half. Kingston’s Megan Antoni broke the tie with nine minutes left in the game, her ninth score of the season, and Jamie Schultz added insurance just two minutes later with a score.
"This is just how our season’s been going," Sequim coach Enid Halewyn said. "We don’t have a lot of depth … but they played smart, they played loud."
Despite a few tears, most seniors left the field with a smile on their faces, even the injured Agostine.
"I wouldn’t have had it any other way," she said. "I’m going to miss these girls."
Agostine’s score was the team-leading fifth of the season, not bad considering she was playing with an injury: Just 15 minutes into a game against Olympic on Oct. 14, she partially tore a ligament in her leg.
"(That’s) not keeping me away from this field," she said.
The strong finish helped Sequim somewhat recoup from a 5-0 home loss to Klahowya two nights previous.
Bekka Schell had three goals while Rocki Winkler had a goal and two assists for Klahowya, helping the Eagles stay the No. 2-2A team in the Olympic League behind North Mason.
Kazandra Holliday, Klahowya’s standout softball pitcher in the spring, recorded the shutout in goal.
Sequim’s season ends this week. After a match-up with Port Townsend on Oct. 28, the Wolves finish the 2008 season in Belfair, taking on the league-leading North Mason Bulldogs on Oct. 30.
