Sequim’s Wolves got a double dose of good news heading into the toughest part of their season, winning a double-dual meet against Bremerton and Port Townsend on Jan. 26 to close out the regular season.

Sequim finishes the 2010-2011 campaign at 4-4 and, most important, looks healthy and ready for the postseason that begins on Feb. 4.

The Wolves compete in a subdistrict tournament in Port Angeles Feb. 4-5. Top grapplers advance to the West Central District tournament, slated for Feb. 12 at Washington High School in Tacoma.

For Sequim, the subregional tournament figures to be every bit as tough as the district as most of the top teams in the district (Klahowya, North Mason, Port Angeles, Olympic) are in Sequim’s own league.

Top wrestlers from seven teams in the Olympic League battle eight teams from the South Puget Sound League on Feb. 12, with wrestlers vying for spots at the Mat Classic state tournament at the Tacoma Dome Feb. 18-19.

Sequim sweeps

Sequim’s final two matches of the season on Jan. 26 were hardly matches at all, as the Wolves pounced on Bremerton, 51-24, and ripped Port Townsend’s Redskins, 56-18.

Against Bremerton’s Knights, Cody Field picked up a pin at 145 pounds, downing Aron Dela Zarda in the second round. At 160 pounds, Lopaka Yasumura pinned Bremerton’s Michael Moran in the third round.

Sequim 135-pounder Derek Fruin earned a technical fall after subduing Ben Smith, 16-0.

Royhon Agostine took home a win at 103 pounds with a 15-5 win against Allison Johnson.

Bremerton forfeited five weight classes.

Against Port Townsend, Sequim earned 18 easy points, thanks to three Redskins forfeits, and earned the rest, garnering six pins, including Fruin (135 pounds), Winston Babb (140), Field (145), Chris Falkey (189), Emilion Perete-Cooin (215) and Jacob Cooper (285).

Sequim’s Austin Middleton (130 pounds) earned a 14-8 against Mikhail Callahan.
