Wolves rebound from NK loss, top Knights

Sequim’s volleyball squad racked up 16 aces in a three-set sweep at Bremerton on Oct. 3, helping SHS rebound from a four-set loss to North Kitsap two days earlier.

Rose Gibson paced the Wolves (5-2 in Olympic League play, 5-3 overall) with a 26-for-28 serving effort, earning eight aces along the way in the 25-13, 25-18, 25-15 victory.

She had pair of five-point serving runs in the first game and added two blocks and three kills.

Kenzi Berglund was 8-for-8 serving and led the team with 16 assists.

“Kenzi spread out the sets well for our offense,” SHS coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.

Arianna Stovall had 12 of the Wolves’ 22 kills.

SHS takes set but falls to NK

Sequim opened hot thanks to a Sophia Greenleaf six-point service run that pushed the Wolves to a first-set win against Olympic League-leading North Kitsap, but the Wolves faded, falling 3-1, 21-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-22 to the No. 7-ranked Vikings at home on Oct. 1.

“We played really well the first game and served really well, then we just went flat, and I’m not really sure why,” Webber Heilman said

Greenleaf tallied three aces during her first-set run. She was the Wolves’ top server, going 20-for-21 with six aces and nine digs

“She also had four-point runs in the third and fourth games,” Webber Heilman said. The Sequim coach said the two teams combined for multiple multi-hit rallies.

“There were a lot of rallies; the ball was flying back and forth all match,” Webber Heilman said.

Sequim had trouble inside against North Kitsap’s middle hitters.

“They had two taller middles and they started tipping it on us a lot and we needed to block them,” Webber Heilman said. “That’s what we will work on in practice.”

Stovall led the Wolves with nine kills and three stuff blocks.

Berglund served 13-of-13 with a pair of aces, two kills, 19 assists and eight digs. Brianna Palenik added five kills, while Gibson had three kills, three stuff blocks and six digs. Libero Tiffany Lam added 19 digs and seven perfect serve-receive passes.

“We are right there, it’s just a matter of being able to stop them at the net a little bit better,” Webber Heilman said.

Looking ahead

Sequim was scheduled to take on Kingston on Oct. 8; results were unavailable at press time. The Wolves host North Mason on Oct. 10 and play at No. 8-ranked Bainbridge on Oct. 15.
