Women’s soccer: Everett ends P.C’s win streak

Pirates rebound with 3-0 shutout versus Skagit Valley

The last time the Pirate women’s soccer program lost a regular season conference game, Mitt Romney was still on the campaign trail, the Seahawks were more than a year from a Super Bowl trophy and P.C. men’s coach Andrew Chapman still sported the black and gold.

Everett spoiled a Peninsula unbeaten streak that spanned 36 games and 711 days with a 1-0 win in Everett on Sept. 17.

“It was a pretty even game,” head coach Kanyon Anderson said. “We had a stretch of five poor minutes, got an unlucky bounce and their player pounced on the opportunity.”

Trojan Rachel Detroit broke open the scoreless contest in the 66th minute — the first goal Peninsula’s given up this season — and it was all the offense the game would see. Everett’s Rachel Leupold finished with five saves to earn the shutout while P.C. counterpart Manaia Siania-Unutoa had three saves.

The last Peninsula conference loss was a 1-0 decision to Walla Walla on Oct. 6, 2012.

Peninsula (5-1 in conference, 7-1 overall) rebounded quickly with a 3-0 road victory at Skagit Valley on Sept. 20. Mary Pierce opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark and teammate C.J. Stetser added goals at 41 and 53 minutes. Michele Whan, Olivia Moore and Paxton Rodocker had assists. Kasie Lough had three saves to record the P.C. shutout.

The Pirates were slated to host Edmonds on Sept. 23 and Lower Columbia on Sept. 24. After that, the Pirates have a pair of tough games at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila: Highline on Sept. 29 and Bellevue on Oct. 3.
