An early loss wasn’t going to keep Sequim’s Cayden Beauregard from the medal stand at one of the more competitive prep wrestling tournaments of the season.
The 113-pounder rebounded from an opening round loss to reel off six consecutive wins in the consolation bracket and place fifth overall at the Hammerhead Dec. 15-16 in Bremerton Kitsap Sun Pavilion.
Beauregard’s placing was Sequim’s top individual finish at the tourney that featured 56 schools from across the region with weight class brackets featuring up to 64 individuals.
With 71.5 points, Sequim finished 31st as a team.
Beauregard, ranked No. 7 (at 106 pounds) by washingtonwrestling.net, opened with a single-point loss to Jayden Vo of Spanaway Lake, then picked up wins over Jaxson Knight of Gig Harbor (by pin), Liam Allen of Bethel (by technical fall), Abraham Montealegre of Forks (12-4), Elyas Karimi of Kent Meridian (5-0), Johnson Nguyen of Capital (by pin) and Donald Hetrick of Silas (by pin).
In the consolation semifinals, Beauregard fell 7-6 to Brody Davis of Washougal, but rebounded to earn his fifth place finish against Spanaway Lake’s Vo with a 35-second pin.
Jayms Vilona just missed the medal stand with a 4-2 record at 144 pounds, with three coming by pin. He earned falls of Cooper Nees of Port Angeles (3:35) Omid Neghabat of Bainbridge in 1:00, and Angel Urban of Mount Tahoma in 4:57.
Dylan Bowen earned three wins in his five matches at 190 pounds, each by pin. He pinned Daniel Santos of Auburn-Riverside in 1:37, Gig Harbor’s Robert Wade in 4:33, and Asher Epstein of Peninsula in 2:28.
A quintet of Wolves went 2-2 in their weight brackets, including Ryan Spelker at 120 pounds, Johnny Vilona at 126 pounds (both wins by pin), Finn Jones at 132 (one by pin), Hunter Halverson at 144 (both wins by pin) and Ari Skov at 175 (one win by pin).
Riley Downs (138) and Roger Burwash (165) each picked up wins in their weight classes as well.
Wolves cruise past Kingston’s Bucs
Facing a team with less than a dozen wrestlers available, Sequim came away with a 64-12 win at Kingston on Dec. 13.
The Wolves (1-0) won four of the six non-forfeit matches, with Beauregard pinning Ryan Peavey at 120 pounds, Hunter Halverson pinning John Trescott at 144 pounds, James Mason pinning Nick Leache at 157 and Johnny Vilona earning a major decision over Aiden Mullin at 126 pounds.
Sequim’s Brandon Bair (106), Levi Breithaupt (113), Jones (132), Downs (138), Jayms Vilona (150), Skov (175) and Bowen (195) each earned forfeit victories.
“The highlight of the match was actually watching the younger wrestlers in the JV matches … lots of freshman that showed tenacious drive and improving technique,” SHS coach Steve Chinn said.
