Sequim wrestlers faced some serious competition last week, splitting a pair of barn-burners at North Mason and falling to a red-hot North Kitsap team two days later.
Following an unscored Senior Night match against East Jefferson at home on Jan. 23, the Wolves (10-6) took on Olympic and the host North Mason Bulldogs in Jan. 24, winning one and losing one in matches that both came down to the final two pairings.
“That was a real credit to the kids; everybody wrestled hard,” Sequim coach Steve Chinn said.
Sequim opened against Olympic and picked up pins at 150 pounds (James Mason), 157 (James Smith), 175 (Ari Skov) and 190 (Dylan Bowen) and a two-point win by Jayms Vilona at 144 pounds to leap ahead 27-15, but had to forfeit two heavy weight classes. After a loss at 106 pounds, Sequim rebounded with Cayden Beauregard’s pin at 113 pounds. Up 33-30 with two matches remaining, the Trojans picked up decisions at 120 and 126 pounds to edge Sequim, 36-33. Also earning a win for Sequim were Jayms Vilona.
In the nightcap, a back-and-forth affair between the Wolves and Bulldogs was cinched when Riley Downs earned a decision for a 42-41 Sequim victory. Earning pins along the way were Beauregard, Bowen, Skov and Jayms Vilona (144), while Johnny Vilona (126) picked up a victory at 126 pounds.
The Wolves capped the regular season at No. 7-ranked North Kitsap, falling to the powerhouse Vikings 58-16 and topping East Jefferson 36-25 on Jan. 26 in Poulsbo; further details were not available at press time.
“They’re loaded,” Chinn said of North Kitsap prior to the match.
Sequim went into their final matches with four weight classes forfeited, with two weight divisions unfilled and two starters out with illnesses.
Sequim hosts the sub-regional tournament at the Rick Kaps Gymnasium on Saturday, on Feb. 3; matches start at 9:30 a.m.
“If we can get five or six kids to regionals, that’d be a nice trip,” Chinn said.
