The Olympic Avalanche, a sixth-grade girls select basketball squad, won their third consecutive tournament and ninth overall championship by going 4-0 at the 27th Annual KVA Memorial in Tumwater Feb. 14-15.
“The girls played extremely well this weekend,” coach Joe Marvelle said. “I’m so proud of them all. They dominated all four games with fundamentally sound basketball while showing great sportsmanship.”
In game one, the Avalanche rolled Black Hills 52-10, with Millie Long going for 20 points and Jaida Wood hitting for eight points and nine rebounds.
In game two, the Avalanche shot down Shelton with Sequim’s Kalli Wiker leading the way. She posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
Wiker and Hannah Reetz paced the offense in game three, a 62-16 win against Rochester. Wiker had 16 points and Reetz had 15 and Wood added nine points and five rebounds.
In the championship game, the Avalanche overwhelmed Chehalis 51-27 behind Long’s 14 points. Wiker had eight points and six rebounds while Wood chipped in with a team-high seven rebounds.
“The work they’ve put in since the fourth grade has really paid off for this group,” Marvelle said. “These girls have faced some adversity as a team this past year but are coming through with flying colors and are better because of it.”
